The club was officially founded in 1926 but its history dates back to 1904 with the formation of Naples Foot-Ball & Cricket Club which merged in 1922 with Internazionale Napoli (founded 1912) to become FBC Internaples. After four seasons, the name was changed to AC Napoli. At the end of the 1980s, the club had great success with Diego Maradona. With the Argentine star player, Napoli won the national championship twice, the UEFA Cup and the Coppa Italia.

Na vier seizoenen werd de naam gewijzigd in AC Napoli. Eind jaren tachtig kende de club grote successen met Diego Maradona. Met de Argentijnse sterspeler won Napoli twee keer het landskampioenschap, de UEFA Cup en de Coppa Italia.
